Osteopathy
and Pregnancy
Pregnancy and your back
During pregnancy, and especially in the
later stages, the body produces a hormone called Relaxin which
causes the ligaments of the body to loosen slightly in preparation
for the birth of your child. However, it also puts your back
at increased risk of back pain, sciatica and neck pain.
Many people think that back pain and sciatica
during pregnancy is normal and has to be endured - this is
not true!
Because the ligaments are looser, the problems
can be corrected much more easily and future problems avoided.
This is especially important if you have other young children
that need lifting.
Putting a child into a car seat and carrying
a baby in a car seat are common examples of ways that lower
back problems are caused.
Treatment during Pregnancy
Osteopathic treatment does not harm your
baby or the pregnancy and there are lots of different techniques
that we can use at various stages throughout the months. For
example, in the latter stages when some positions are uncomfortable,
side lying techniques can be employed to maximise comfort.
A combination of soft tissue release techniques
and gentle mobilisation of joints is used to realign the lower
back and pelvis and to improve bio-mechanical stability, thus
reducing symptoms.
Advice can also be given regarding exercises
and stretches, things to avoid and tips for how to look after
your back when the baby arrives.
Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction
Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) is a
very painful condition that can occur during pregnancy. Acute
pain can be experienced around the pubic bone or anywhere
around the pelvic girdle and is caused by instability of the
joint at the front of the pelvis. It is important to rule
out other causes of the symptoms such as diastasis symphysis
pubis which nay need medical attention.
These symptoms can be treated before they become
too severe and can help to reduce the problems that occur
after the birth when you have to do lots of lifting.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required depends
on your specific problem. This will be assessed using a full
case-history and relevant examination (you will not be required
to remove your clothes). Any treatment that is appropriate
will be explained and any questions answered.
We have osteopaths available 365 days per year
and can often offer same day appointments
Did you know?
Your ligaments will remain looser until
you finish breastfeeding.
